NaNoWriMo Day One

I want to go to bed more than anything else right now, but I wanted to stop in here and boast how well I’ve done today.

Last night I was half thinking about staying up past midnight to start on NaNo. I’d had a late night on Saturday though, so was really tired. Nasty Twitter people talked me into staying up though, and to be honest I’m actually glad I did. Getting 154 words in before bed felt like an achievement.

But boy am I paying for it now. I can hardly keep my eyes open.

The story started pretty well, and I’ve managed to rack up 1854 words today *runs round the house in excitement* I’m on my way. Not only am I on my way, I’m ahead of target! By nearly 200. Woop!

I do have a pretty big problem. actually I have one pretty big problem and one medium size problem.

The medium-sized problem is that I keep forgetting what I’m doing, and deleting words. WHAT?? I’m deleting words and replacing them. That can’t happen. There’s no way I’m going to be deleting every time I get a word or two, or sentence wrong. I have a plan. At the bottom of where I’m writing, I’ve drawn a line. Any words I don’t like, I’m going to move below the line. That way I get to keep all the words I write, but I also get to keep my real word count. Result.

My bigger problem is tense.I’ve been writing Holiday in present tense, but this one is in past tense. Or would be if I could remember. It seems at the moment I automatically write in present. I guess that’s to be expected when that’s all I’ve been doing recently, but it’s so annoying. I keep wanting to hit myself. My housemate may be wondering what all the strange noises coming from the room are!

I’ll get there though. Part of me wants to just scrap the idea of it being past tense and just do it present, but I don’t want to. I managed Italian Infatuation past so I can damn well manage this.

What I really didn’t like today, was constantly seeing my word count in word. I’m using 2007 (I think) where at the bottom next to the page number, is a word count. Because I started on 0 this morning, the word count was my word count for the day. That made it hard to write. Although actually it only made it hard to about 800, after that I was flying.

I’ve said this before, but I find writing to be a little like running – it’s hard when you start, but once you get into it each time, it gets much easier. Yesterday I went for a run. I planned to do 20 minutes. For the first 7 or 8 minutes I was constantly clock watching, it seemed to drag, but then once I got into it, I started flying, then suddenly I was on 18.

Writing today was the same. I was constantly looking at the count. I worked out where half of my total was and kept watching to get there. Then as soon as I passed it, I forgot about it until about 1500 words. See, writing is like running!

I got invited out for dinner tonight, but said no. Why? Because I wanted to go to the gym, then come home and write my words. I really hope I can be that disciplined for the next 29 days!

I’m going to my first write-in tomorrow. I think someone’s called it Two Thousand word Tuesday. The plan is to meet up at a cafe, chat for a bit, write for 45 minutes (I think) chat, then write again. I’m going to try for Three Thousand word Tuesday. He he!

I’ve been thinking about tomorrow actually. I’ve got Wednesday off work (some reason like going to meet the boyfriend at the airport – although just as much so I can write lots of lovely shiny NaNo words) so don’t have to get up early then. Which means I guess I could stay up late tomorrow writing, seeing as I do my best writing at night. Well, that or I’ve run out of other things to do instead by th evening?

Just before I go, I’ll just remind you about the Search Term Challenge over at Ergofiction. There are ten stories entering the competition. One of them is mine. If you go over to the website you can read them all and vote for your favourite three. There are some really good stories (well, one’s mine isn’t it, ha ha), well worth the time if you have it. And all cleverly constructed to included some of the bazaar search term words that have been used to find blogs. Bazaar like ‘secret smell,’ ‘corduroy buttons’ and ‘ torpedo breasts!’ Seriously, go check it out.

Me, well I’m off to bed now. Night people!

Quick Sunday Blog

I really don’t have time for a blog cause I need to do some ironing, then go to bed early (I’m working early), but I wanted to do a very quick random Sunday blog seeing as I’ve actually done proactive stuff this weekend.

Yep. You guessed it, I’ve done some writing. In fact I’ve done some writing today, and did some yesterday. Roughly 400 words over the weekend. I used the prompts from NovelKicks both days because I couldn’t think of anything myself. I’m still writing everything it seems in Kate’s voice (except Fiction Friday). It’s interesting seeing how she reacts to different situations.

My mum got on my case on Friday about joining a writing group. I’ve already looked around London and found a few that would be good to join, but at the time I had too much going on in my private life to be able to even consider doing it. Then I just forgot. Glad she reminded me actually. I’m going to look into it again tomorrow. It’s not like I’m doing much at work at the moment.

Yeah, in fact for until I leave there (when I get a new job, or get made redundant at the end of Sep/beginning of Oct) I’m pretty much going to be doing nothing. My job is 2/3 switchboard/1/3 reception. But they’ve just moved the switchboard to another office. But they want to stay fully staffed until the end. Personally I’m pretty happy about it. I think maybe, I’m not sure but maybe, I’ll edit Italian Infatuation.

I guess if you believe in fait and that things happening for a reason (my motto in life is ‘Everything happens for a reason’), the fact I found the copy I printed off today should mean that I should edit it. What else am I going to do? Oh, I know – write Holiday. One or the other anyway.

I wonder if I could edit II while also writing Holiday? They’re in different tenses, different POV and for different markets, so I’m not sure it’s even a good idea to consider it.

Ooh, talking of tenses. Most of the books I read are past tense. Occasionally I find one in the present. As I blogged the other day, I sometimes find it hard to get my mind round the change when I’m reading two different ones back to back. Well, I started a new one today that was present – like the last one I read – and it took me three chapters to realise it was in that tense. That was great cause when I went from past to present on the last two, I found it pretty hard going.

If I have this problem, why am I writing Holiday in present tense? Hmmmm. Possibly something I need to think about.

The new book I’ve started is Brown Owls Guide to Life by Kate Harrison. I’ve had the book for ages and just not got round to reading it, but as I’m going to an author thing in a few weeks that she’s going to be at, I really want to have read something of hers. I think I’m going to enjoy it.

I had a plan today to finish my writing course assignment. Reading this morning and a serious spring clean of my room this afternoon/evening changed that plan. Which to be honest I’m a little annoyed about. But, if my room’s clean and tidy it might encourage me to go back there to write after work. Actually my housemate’s away this week, which means when I get in I won’t go and sit in front of the TV (that she always has on) I’ll turn on my laptop and probably play on Facebook all night instead. Ha ha. Well, maybe if I didn’t have plans almost every night I’d get some writing done!

Ok. Early start, so have to hit the sack. I’m going to have  a good writing week this week. I am, I am. In fact, I have a feeling this week is actually going to be a great week! I’ll keep you posted 🙂

My Thursday Rambling

It’s Thursday and for the second week running, I’ve started my FictionFriday piece before Friday. I don’t know what the world is coming to.

I started writing it as Kate – the MC from one of my novels, the character from my last few FictionFriday pieces. But, I had to stop writing from her POV because it sounded like it might be personal. It wasn’t, but I imagine some people reading it could have taken it to be. That’s the pain writing from a POV of a character that’s in the same situation as me. I know that’s a little cryptic, but I’m afraid it’s going to stay that way.

So, I took the same idea and swapped over to using Dan as the character. Dan’s the MMC from the novel – Kate’s best friend. However I’m a bit stuck as to who the girl he’s with should be. There’s an exact place in the novel I want this story to fit in. Although I could never use this in the book (it’s 1st person from Kate’s POV), now I’ve got this idea in my head I NEED to write it. But I don’t know if the girl should be the one that turns into his girlfriend, or just a random girl.

Oh yeah, this piece isn’t going to be a complete story, it’s going to have to be something taken out of something bigger (that probably won’t be written), so sorry in advance. Actually I might be able to make it a self-contained story.

I read about 10k of ‘Holiday’ last week. I quite like it. I want to keep writing it, but think I need to put the bits together before I start on it. That’s why I’m loving these Fiction Friday pieces, little glimpses into Kate and Dan’s lives without getting into the novel.

I entered a ‘competition’ to ‘win’ a ticket to Rowan Coleman’s book launch party for The Happy Home for Broken Hearts (which I will review soon, it’s sooooo good). You have to write a short review of your favourite book of hers, then she’ll pick the 40 (yes 40) she likes and they get to go to the party. At the moment there’s only three reviews, so I’m totally going. I may have to warn my friends they won’t see me much this month, I’ll be at loads of author events. Woop!

Before I started writing, there was so much I wanted to say, now I’m here I can’t think of another thing. As soon as I press ‘Publish’ I’ll remember at least one. How annoying.

Ok, got some things…

I started Jane Green’s Girl Friday yesterday – I’m already on p124. I did read A LOT yesterday somehow. Oh yeah, it was raining on my lunch break so I sat in the canteen and read. It’s really good, but I’m having a bit of a problem settling into it being in the present tense. This happens quite often when I read a book that’s past, then straight away swap to one that’s present. I can’t really pinpoint why, but something in my mind just doesn’t like the swap over.

Other than that, I’m loving it – as I totally expected to with a Jane Green novel. She’s definitely one of my favourite authors. Straight Talking is possibly my favourite novel of all time. Oh, after The Time Traveller’s Wife and Twlight (I’m still freaked out a vampire/teen book is in the top 2). I guess it’s possibly my favourite Chick Lit book ever.

Speaking of which, I read something on Simon & Schuster’s Facebook page recommending a survey to find the top 10 Chick Lit novels of the last decade. It’s run by Chick Lit Central on Facebook…. Actually, I’ve just looked and it’s closed. Damn, I didn’t give my opinion. To take part you had to list your top 5 chick lit novels. I couldn’t think of my top 5. I got top three – Straight Talking by Jane Green, Can You Keep a Secret by Sophie Kinsella and Angels by Marian Keyes. But 2 more? Ooh, that’s hard. So I didn’t add any, and now I’ve missed my chance  *stamps off in a mood*

A few weeks ago one of our computers at work crashed and lost everything that was on the desktops. Yes I had loads of stuff. I had thought that it was probably stuff I’ve emailed myself anyway, but I’m now not so sure.

I’m 100% sure I’ve lost my list of books I’ve read. I was compiling a list of all the books I can remember reading as an adult – just for my own amusement. I was up to 90 odd. And have lost it. I am so annoyed with myself for not saving it somewhere else too.

I think, although I’m not sure, I’ve lost a load of research I did on Italy. Damn.

This should teach me a lesson. I need to buy an external hard drive to save all my stuff on. I know you can get them online and stuff, but I just want one. However I do it, I should do it soon, every 3 days I get a reminder pop up telling me to do it. I’ll be so annoyed at myself if I lose everything and haven’t backed it up. Just another thing for the ‘To be done’ list!

Weekend writing

That’s right folks, I’m blogging on a weekend (woo hoo – that’s  a goal for the month under my belt).  Not only that, I’ve also done some writing for ‘Holiday’.  I woke up with an idea for a scene in my head.  Rather than just think about it more, and write down the idea later, I got my notepad out and wrote it out.  Well wrote about 70% of it. And the notes for the other 30%.  I’m pretty impressed with the idea of it.  It’s going to help things flow along nicely.

Also this morning I worked out a main detail for the story.  It’s a detail I’d been struggling with internally.  My main characters are at this stage in their lives and I couldn’t work out how to make it believable that they’d got there.  It was going to be a bit… not unbelievable, but hard to believe, but I’ve worked it out.  I can’t believe I didn’t think of it before.  I just need to write it down now… Done.  Wow this Sunday is productive.

The scene I’ve just written was in 1st person.  I put very little thought into the fact I was going to do that – it just felt right.  I think it works much better than if it was 3rd person because I really want it seen from her eyes.  I think it’s important to see where she’s at in that moment of time.  I’m still going to re write some scenes to see if it works all the time.  It’s also in present tense.  I like present tense but find it really hard to write sometimes.  Hmmmmmmm.

I started reading a book last night.  Unfortunately not one from my to read list, or even a fiction book.  It’s about economics.  Why economics can explain ‘almost anything’. I hope it’s going to be one of those semi educational books that will stay with me and at certain points in my life parts of it will be brought up to add to conversations (you know the type, like Bill Bryson’s ‘A short history of nearly everything’ – love that).  I guess it’s also good to read a selection of things.  I just feel fiction would be better for where I’m going.  Ah well, sometimes you’ve just got to do what you want at that moment not what’s good for the future.  Besides I’m staying at my mum’s in my brother’s room and there’s no other books I’ve not read in here.  In fact there’s a few of MY books I have read in here! I guess it saves me finding space for yet more books though so shouldn’t complain!.
